Gemiler Island (St Nicholas Island)

Culture & History

A small, pine-dotted island just off Gemiler beach, about 9 km from Fethiye beyond Kayaköy. Between the 4th and 7th centuries it was an important Byzantine pilgrimage site: the remains of several churches, chapels, houses and cisterns cover its slopes, and a roofed stone processional walkway climbs to the church at the summit. Some researchers believe St Nicholas – the saint behind Santa Claus – was first buried here before his relics were moved to Myra (Demre). From the top there is a superb view of the bay, especially at sunset.

Any local tips for Gemiler Island (St Nicholas Island)?
