Emergency bag checklist

What every resident of Fethiye should keep in an evacuation bag: a checklist for the first 72 hours after an earthquake, with summer and winter items.

Water & food

  • Drinking water for 3 days — About 3 litres per person per day
  • Extra water for the heat (summer) — Summer days in Fethiye reach 35–40 °C
  • Long-life, high-energy food — Canned food, dried fruit, nuts, crackers, tahini–pekmez, energy bars
  • Can opener and a spoon / cutlery
  • Reusable cup or bottle

Documents & money

  • Copies of passports / ID and residence permits — In a waterproof bag; also keep photos on your phone
  • Copies of title deed, DASK policy and insurance papers
  • Cash in small notes — Card terminals and ATMs may not work
  • Paper list of important phone numbers — Family, doctor, neighbours, your consulate; emergency number 112
  • Spare house and car keys

Light, power & communication

  • Torch / headlamp with spare batteries
  • Charged power bank and phone cable
  • Battery or hand-crank radio
  • Whistle — To signal rescuers if you are trapped
  • Lighter or waterproof matches, candles

First aid & medicine

  • First-aid kit — Plasters, bandages, antiseptic, painkillers, scissors
  • Your regular medicines for at least a week — Plus a copy of prescriptions
  • Spare glasses / contact lenses
  • Dust masks
  • Sunscreen and a sun hat (summer)
  • Mosquito repellent (summer)

Hygiene

  • Soap, hand sanitiser, wet wipes
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Toilet paper and rubbish bags
  • Sanitary pads / tampons

Clothing & shelter

  • Change of underwear and socks
  • Sturdy closed shoes — Streets may be covered in broken glass and rubble
  • Raincoat or poncho
  • Light, breathable clothes (summer)
  • Warm layers: fleece, hat, gloves (winter) — Winter nights in Fethiye can drop to a few degrees
  • Blanket or sleeping bag (winter)
  • Emergency foil blanket
  • Hand warmers (winter)

Tools

  • Multi-tool or pocket knife
  • Work gloves
  • Duct tape and a few metres of rope
  • Notebook and pen

If you have children, elderly relatives or pets

  • Baby food, formula, nappies
  • A small toy or book for children
  • Hearing-aid batteries, walking aids, special diet food
  • Pet food, water, lead and carrier — Plus a photo of your pet and its vaccination record
  • Keep the bag by the front door, where every family member can grab it in seconds.
  • One bag per person: everyone carries their own water, documents and medicines.
  • Check the bag twice a year – when you switch between summer and winter – and replace expired food, water, medicines and batteries.
  • Agree with your family on a meeting point and find your nearest AFAD assembly area in advance.
